lovely winter get away...really.

OK folks...this was our New Year celebration this year!
My friend found this GREAT deal to rent out a boy scout lodge up on Mt. Hood for New Years Eve.  I had visions of a big picture window over a fluffy snowy night landscape, a roaring fireplace, a cozy sofa, delicious food galore, games, kids tucked into bunk beds, tubing and skiing the next day with intermittent hot cocoa breaks.  Mmm...now that's what I'm talkin' 'bout!

See we do not get snow where we live, except a dusting maybe 1-2 time a year (two years ago we were lucky to get enough that I was actually able to cross country ski around on  the streets in our neighborhood!).  And most days we are glad about the lack of snow.  It's nice to have 40-50 degree weather all winter: no driving in snow, no shoveling it, and running outdoors all year round!  But occasionally we do miss it.  Especially the kids.  So now we have to take vacations in the winter to visit the snow.  {Thankfully beautiful Mt. Hood is only an hour away...I'm telling ya, Portland is the best place to live...if only we could convince all our family and friends to move here, we would never leave.}

The night of New Years Eve was beautiful.  Not a cloud in the sky.  Brent had to work, so we couldn't head up to the lodge until the evening.  And of course, we had to stop at the store to buy new sleeping bags since our old ones mysteriously (?) disappeared out of our garage sometime this past year.  By the time we made it to the lodge it was dark and COLD!  Oh MY coldy cold!  But the stars were aMAZing!

We proceeded to walk through the dark, cold, beautiful snow down a trail through the forest to the lodge.  And because I failed to thoroughly read the information about the lodge that was previously forwarded to me, I did not know that the parking lot was so far from the lodge!  And thus I packed WAY TOO much stuff.  So after many freeze-your-nostrils-when-you-breathe COLD trips back and forth to the lodge (did I mention it was COLD?), I woke up a completely passed out Joshua who was still in the car...to find out that he had pee'd his pants (he's going to kill me if he finds out that I'm writing this).  Oh joy.  He never pees his pants.  Ever.  Out of all times, why does he choose NOW when it is so COLD out and we've already taken all the bags to the lodge so there's nothing for him to change into?  His clothes would literally freeze to his skin if we tried carrying him to the lodge.  WAIT!  We still have MY bag in the car!  So I quickly change him into my yoga pants my "Loving Support Makes Breastfeeding Work" t-shirt (for under his heavy winter coat).  But the pants are way too big!  THANKFULLY, I have a lot of experience with improvising on the spot and I'm always prepared for such instances (and THANKFULLY I over packed so I had extra clothes :-).  I had an elastic around my wrist for later pony tail use, and I'm able to make a pony tail in the yoga pants so that they'll stay on.  Crisis averted.  Whew!  But we do have a future blackmail picture:

By the time we got all of our stuff in the lodge...and put our kids to bed, we stood around eating our treats for about 20 minutes and then it was midnight.  yAy!  WE tried to drink our Martinelli's, but it was frozen solid.  Thankfully we and our friends know how to laugh at such AmazING situaTions!

After midnight and no games :-( we retired to our bunk room with  no doors...totally open to the rest of the lodge (where other strangers are staying!), and slip into our very rustic plywood bunks with about a foot of space between our faces and the bunk above us.  This place was build for scouts and I'm going to venture a guess that it wasn't built to code.  I'm going to say though that 1) at least the bathroom had a door that locked (although OUR bathroom was always occupied by guests from other levels)  2) at least we had a warm place to sleep because it was SO VERY cold outside 3) at least there was a huge blazing fire in the lobby of the lodge, which our unit overlooked (although if the lodge had caught on fire in the night I'm not sure we would've been able to shimmy ourselves out of our bunk space before the rustic wooden lodge burned to the ground.)

happy new year with friends!

BUT!  Despite all that, we witnessed the MOST beautiful scenery.  And that made it all worth it.  There is something magical about the soft, stillness of the snow covered forest at night.  There's nothing like it in the whole wide world.  Maybe it's so magical because Brent and I spent the winter months growing in our admiration for each other, and we had our first kiss under lightly falling snow in a soft, cold forest at night.  (We were hiking, OK?)

The next morning, we were all alive and ready for the
TUBING HILL:

first, getting the babies bundled up!

^ Next, playing in the snow (Toby)!

So, did we have fun?  YES we did!  Happy New Year!
But next year...I think we'd prefer to get a room at Timberline Lodge instead.

And just for fun:

Because of Him...

...Merry Christmas
I KNOW she will rise again.  Exactly the way I saw her last, but with movement and color and breath.
And that is because.of.HIM.
And THAT is the only gift I need for Christmas.

I picked up that baby sized evergreen wreath in Oregon, that land of her birth...and drove it to Utah just for her.  It is the perfect reminder that life is eternal and love is immortal.

As we were driving to the graveyard, we were listening to the Christmas gift we received from Brent's parents: The Mormon Tabernacle Choir 100 years.
(very excellent album, by the way)
And we were trying to find Christmas songs to play since it was Christmas Day and we neglected to bring any other Christmas music with us on our trip.  It was by no chance that as soon as we pulled into the graveyard the song "Amazing Grace" played.  Because of Him.
And as we left, the very next song "God be with you Till we Meet Again" was playing.
And I realized for the first time, that the song was being sung to me and not by me to someone else.
Like as if, Elsa was praying for God to be with me to comfort and guide me till we meet again.
Such a beautiful way to spend Christmas.

And to answer back to my last Elsa-related post:
Yes!  I will NEVER stop talking about her.  NEVER!  Thanks for the assurance.
What I do want to stop dwelling on is the issue that I'm so sad because I don't have a girl to raise on the earth right now.  I hope I get one...but if I do (and I have hope, faith and pray that I do), it is going to take some time.
And I need patience.
And I need to stop thinking about it so much, and kind of Enjoy the Journey more.

And thinking about and loving Elsa is part of the journey.
Real Christmas

We left Oregon late in the day, the day before Christmas Eve, and ended up spending the night in Boise...and pulled into my mom's house on Christmas Eve to join her husband and his kids (who we consider to be great friends) and grandkids.

Merry Christmas Eve!

We exchanged gifts with Grandma G and Grandpa Marv....and the boys loved their toys and books
On Christmas morning we had breakfast with the Grandparents and then we took a drive south into the Salt Lake Valley...oh how we love you Salt Lake!  And we miss all of you except your pollution!
Ollie in my mom's old crib from when she was a baby...
and he's wearing his Christmas sweater that grandma knit for him.
SLC from the freeway, through a light haze
what a beautiful sight from inside the new car

Guess where we were headed in Salt Lake City??
Here:
My new favorite place in SLC.
What a beautiful thing to go and be with my daughter on Christmas Day.  I miss her.  {sigh}

Then we drove up to the other grandparents...gave them our gift and hung out with them and some of Brent's other siblings for a few hours.  Lots of fun!  Love them all.
Happy Christmas Day!
The next day we drove back up into SLC and went to church with Brent's awesome sister Liz and her cool husband!  And then we took a walk through a light snow in City Creek Canyon:
It was a real treat for the boys, who were begging for snow!

 Jonny and Liz
 and their cutey puppy

Next stop, the beautiful and lovely Temple Square of Salt Lake!  We can't get enough of this place...our kids love it; we love it!  The spirit is so sweet and pure in this beautiful place:

Toby wanted this picture.  It was amazing to me how much our children seemed to feel the spirit at this place.  How could you not feel wonderful and at awe in front of such a beautiful statue?

Joshua enjoyed reading all of the stories that go along with the paintings
And the kids never stop reminding us that we were married in this temple.
Yep...we're so happy to be an eternal family.

And finally, one last dinner with Brent's family:
Some cousin pictures!
I just can't believe how big these cousins are getting...gosh, you leave for 3 years and they grow up on you!  And oh!  We missed the cousin families that couldn't be there because of sickness and distance! Joshua and Toby mentioned the missing cousins by name...wishing there were there too.  We hope to see everyone next time!

Oliver and Sadie
They are the exact same size, even though Sadie is 3 months older!
Notice that Ollie is kinda sitting up by himself in the pictures on the left.
And notice Ollie's turtle lip in the bottom right picture.  He gets that from me.  Hehe!

We were able to squeeze in dinner with my mom one last night and then we drove home the next day.  We were praying for good roads!  We had the most delightful drive over the blizzardy mountains in eastern Oregon.  Thankfully our new car has all wheel drive and we had chains for all four wheels!  It was like riding in a snow cat.  We were truly blessed with safety.

I am so glad that we had a cheater Christmas in Oregon and had a different kind of Christmas without many gifts, but surrounded by people we love...and blessed with many gifts of the spirit.  Cheater Christmas just might be our new family tradition!
